As lead singer Adam Duritz puts it, “…it’s about a flood of sin and liquor and dissolution and insanity and it’s about trying to rebuild the life you wrecked in the wake of that flood. It’s about the way it feels. It’s about me.”
Although that’s a lot to take in, it’s basically true. If you’ve ever seen Counting Crows live, they are usually pretty drunk and in some sort of disarray, and they’ve been that way for the better part of a decade. This album is basically a shot at redemption.
With “Saturday Nights” referring to the time to party, and “Sunday Mornings,” being the time to recover and reflect, this album is strange because every song is so different from the ones before and after it. Certain ones are great and remind you of the classic tunes of CC, like Cowboys and Los Angeles, but others seem out of place and forced, like Le Ballet Door and Washington Square. It’s like a person coming back from rehab, going to a party, and pretending to be their same drunk self while sipping on straight tonic – it just doesn’t work.

Sounds like:
Hard rock…no wait, chill reflections, no wait, more rock, wait...
Listen to it when:
You wake up after a night of partying and want to continue feeling confused
